Sir Thomas Moore (1477-1535)

• When Henry VIII came to power, he wanted to create an "new economy."
  • In order to achieve this, Henry VIII choose advisers that were outside the nobility.
  • Henry VIII choose Thomas Moore, who was a London Merchant.
• Most famous literary work, "A Dialogue Concerning Heresies and Matter of Religion," was a reply to William Tyndale's "Parable of the Wicked Mammon."
  • Parable of Wicked Mammon was written to explained justification by Faith
  • Parable of Wicked Mammon was considered to be so heretical that he had to get special permission by King Henry VIII to read it.
  • "A Dialogue Concerning Heresies and Matter of Religion" was written as a response.
• Moore's attitude towards Lutheranism was openly hostile and scornful in tone.
• Moore attacks

  • Celibacy of Clergy
• Who has the right to interpret Scripture
  • Only Clergy can interpret Scripture and decide exceptionable methods of interpreting Scripture.

  • The Authority of the Church is greater than the Authority of Scripture because the Church came before Scripture and create Scripture.
• Moore's most controversial position:
  • Heretics must be killed.
  • Moore was beheaded after Henry VIII declared England as a Protestant nation and Moore refused to convert to Protestantism.

William Tyndale (1495-1536)

• Completed English translation of the Bible in 1525
  • Arrested for Heresy and burned at the stake in 1536
• Unusual Qualification for Translating the Bible into English
  • A scholars knowledge and thoroughness

  • Preachers zeal and ability to communicate with people
• Historian say, "Tyndale is a man who's epitaphs is the Reformation."
• Major writing contain these themes
  • Supreme authority of Scripture.
  • Justification by faith
  • The Right of Individual to read and interpret scripture.
• Tyndale's writing draw from those of Martin Luther.
• Tyndale's most influential and controversial writing is "Parable of the Wicked Mammon."
• Authority of Scripture
  • "There is difference between 'the Word' and the Bible. Believers come to God through the Word"
• Tyndale's contribution is nothing ordained by man can supersede the authority of God's word.
