Stargirl was written by Jerry Spinelli and published in 2000.

Stargirl. She's as magical as the desert sky. As strange as her pet rat. As mysterious as her own name. From the day she arrives at quiet MICA High in a burst fo color and sound, the hallways hum with the murmur of "Stargirl, Stargirl." She captures Leo Borlock's heart with just one smile. She sparks a school spirit revolution with just one cheer. The students of MICA High are enchanted. At first. Then they turn on her. Stargirl is suddenly shunned for everything that makes her different. And Leo, panicked and depserate with love, urges her to become the very thing that can detroy her: normal. In this celebration of nonconformity, Newberry Medalist Jerry Spinelli weaves a tense, emotional tale about the perils of popularity - and the thrill and inspiration of first love.

Plot Summary Edit

This story is told by Leo, an 11th grade student at MICA Area High School. There is a new student in school who is very different from the other kids. Stargirl, otherwise known as Susan Julia Caraway, marches to the beat of her own drum. She wears clothes that other kids find strange, and plays the ukulele at lunchtime, singing to the other students. Nobody knows what to think at first, but they soon start to like how Stargirl is different. Soon, kids are acting different too, but eventually they start to dislike Stargirl once more because of the way she acts. Will Stargirl stay the way she is or change her ways to fit in better with the other students? You'll just have to read and find out!

Memorable Quotes Edit

"In that moonlit hours, I acquired a sense of the otherness of things. I liked the feeling the moonlight gave me, as if it wasn't the opposite of day, but its underside, its private side, when the fabulous purred on my snow-white sheet like some dark cat come in from the desert." Chapter 2, p. 12

"She was illusive. She was today. She was tomorrow. She was the faintest scent of a cactus flower, the flitting shadow of an elf owl. We did not know what to make of her. In our minds we tried to pin her to a corkboard like a butterfly, but the pin merely went through and away she flew." Chapter 3, p.15

Teacher Evaluation Edit

This is a great book with great characters. The way Stargirl is not afraid to be herself makes her an outstanding character. This book has a lot of heart and a lot of funny parts. It will keep you reading until the end. Any student can relate to this book in some way and take something away from it. I highly recommend this book!
