Perhaps the greatest challenge posed by "the City" is how to create cohesive communities. One of the frequent tendencies seems to be the marginalization of the poorest city dwellers into single class neighborhoods (slums). Often there is an ethnic component to this process (as in ghettos). On the other side, I'm fascinated by the growth of gated communities throughout the US and abroad. What drives this process? I'm sure the social science Unis out there have all sorts of answers for my questions. This topic seems broad and international- there is ample room to discuss this topic from the standpoint of the US, India, China, Brazil, Peru, etc. (Jonathan B.)
