Queen Elizabeth's Grammar school is one of few Grammar schools left in the United Kingdom following large education reforms made by Margaret Thatcher in the 1980's.

The school was founded at Tudor Hall to provide free education for local boys. The charter was passed by Queen Elizabeth I, and a copy is seen on display in the sixth form block. The school relocated in the 1920's, and this is when the main building and swimming pool was built. The new swimming pool is underway.
